Social mobility - the degree to which an individual or group’s status is able to change in terms of position in the social hierarchy – has become a topic of central political concern within the European Union. In the context of the current crisis, there is concern that mobility within a generation (intra-generational mobility) and/or mobility across generations (inter-generational mobility) could be in decline.

This seminar aims to review the current state of research and knowledge on the issue of inter-generational and intra-generational mobility by:

• assessing the current situation in the EU-27;
• evaluating the impact of family and education background on social mobility;
• addressing the issue of intra-generational mobility and poverty.
